“The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system. Our unresolved negative issues are major contributors to many physical pains and disease.”
Gary Craig, Creator of EFT
What is EFT?
Emotional Freedom Technique, commonly abbreviated to EFT, is now more commonly known at ‘Tapping’, is a form of Energy Psychology, which is a combination of modern psychology and the ancient Chinese meridian energy system of acupuncture. But, instead of the use of needles, EFT uses a simple tapping sequence where you tap lightly with your fingertips on specific meridian points on your head and chest whilst you think about your specific problem, whether it is a traumatic event, emotional suffering, an addiction or pain.
EFT works by clearing the blockage or disruption by tapping on the end points of the body’s energy meridians, whilst thinking of the specific issue you are working on, which sends pulses of energy to rebalance the body’s energy system. This combination of tapping on the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmations works by shifting energy changes the way the brain processes information about a particular issues. So tapping while tuned in to the issue is like rewiring or rerouting the brain’s conditioned negative response.
EFT was first discovered by Dr. Roger Callahan, in 1979, a traditional Psychotherapist, who was getting disappointed with the lack of concrete results and the length of time it took for changes to happen for many of his clients. Dr. Callahan designed a set of ‘algorithms’ tapping on different parts of the body to address different issues. One of Dr. Callahan’s students, Gary Craig, created a single sequence of the algorithms, which he later termed EFT, short for Emotional Freedom Technique. This sequence was designed to tap all the major meridian endpoints, regardless of the issue.
“Energy is the blueprint, the infrastructure, the invisible foundation for the health of your body. Your body is composed of energy pathways and energy centers that are in a dynamic interplay with your cells, organs, moods and thoughts. If you can shift these energies, you can influence your health, emotions and state of mind. Energy psychology can shift problematic beliefs, behaviors and emotions so rapidly because it allows the therapist to alter the client’s brain chemistry with a precision yet gentleness that is unprecedented within psychotherapy. And while energy methods can be extraordinary tools in the hands of a skilled clinician, perhaps their most important application is how empowering they can be in your own hands. “
